”And that is where we start”: Focal stances and a person’s capacity to name God as Trinity. $49.99 Starting with the assertion that God who is relationship invites humanity to share this relationship, the dissertation pursues that which signals humanity’s gifted capacity to take part. It finds an investment into the heart of Christian faith visible as individual theologians articulate the meaningfulness of the doctrine of Trinity, and argues that these investments – which it names “focal stances” – come about because of the way God honors individual integrity. Ultimately, focal stances take shape as persons bring encounter with divine mystery into expression both through the power of naming and by living the new life the encounter enables.;This argument arises from a constructive analysis of the trinitarian theologies of Elizabeth Johnson and Rowan Williams, an analysis which demonstrates that focal stances are in operation as both speak about Trinity. The analysis shows how the exercise of “becoming understanding,” by traversing through appropriation, explanation and assessment, and attestation, produces in the theologian a focal stance which serves as a normative guide as one articulates the meaningfulness of the doctrine.;Further support for the argument is drawn from the exercise of interpreting Sacred Scripture, finding in this field descriptions of “becoming understanding” which seek to honor the integrity of text and interpreter. The dissertation takes up Hugh of St Victor, Raymond Brown, David Williams, and Sandra Schneiders, in order to show how persons are charged to name and appropriate the scriptures, all the while in deference to the world of the text given over to human understanding. There is a similarity between the boundaries faith navigates when it responds to Trinity, and the boundaries attendant to respecting Sacred Scripture as both a human construction and the word of God.;As the proper response to God’s invitation into relationship includes developing a focal stance, the project concludes that the discipline of theology should retrieve the |

101 Reasons to Own the World’s Greatest Investment: Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway $19.95 “It took me thirty years of doing everything else first before I found Berkshire. My intent is to share my experience to help you reach your goal much faster.”-Robert P. MilesMuch has been written about the “Sage of Omaha,” Warren Buffett, and the philosophy that made him the most successful investor in history. Yet very little has been made public about Berkshire Hathaway, the NYSE publicly traded investment vehicle that is the hub of Buffett’s financial empire. With this book, longtime shareholder and acknowledged Berkshire Hathaway expert Robert P. Miles fills that gap for investors. With the second largest net worth in the world, Berkshire Hathaway’s $100 billion- plus market value currently surpasses that of such blue-chip giants as Dell, Home Depot, AT&T, Disney, Ford, Gillette, American Express, McDonald’s, and GM. Over the past two decades, Berkshire Hathaway has consistently outperformed the S&P Index by approximately three-to-one, and, not only has the company never posted a negative return, it has achieved double-digit performance in all but four years since 1965. Thirty years ago, a hundred shares of Berkshire Class A Common Stock cost less than $1,000. Today, that same hundred shares is worth over $7 million. Although Berkshire Class A (NYSE:BRK.A) is the highest priced stock on the NYSE, Berkshire Class B shares (NYSE:BRK.B) are now available for 1/30th the price. What is the secret behind Berkshire’s phenomenal success? How is it possible that a relatively obscure company, held by fewer than 20,000 registered shareholders and managed by Buffett and an administrative staff of twelve employees, consistently outperforms the top mutual funds by a wide margin? In 101 Reasons to Own the World’s Greatest Investment, Robert Miles provides complete answers to these questions. He takes a close look at the Buffett philosophy, and he provides a unique insider’s view of the inner workings of Berkshire Hathaway. Among other little-known facts, |

A Diversified Set Of Quantitative Active Investment Models – $64.45 This book describes a possible way how investors can build a set of investment models to earn excess returns in global financial markets. The book argues, that global interest rate and currency markets are less effective and therefore creating more possibilities for profitable active speculation than global stock markets, because they have a higher share of participants who do not have profit maximization as their main goal. Furthermore the book proposes a systematic way how a set of quantitative investment models that is able to earn excess returns in interest rate and currency markets using derivative instruments can be built. The models use technical analysis, econometric analysis and simple ranking as methods, various financial market and macroeconomic data as inputs and give trading signals to trade foreign exchange forward contracts of G10 currency pairs and futures of major advanced government bond and short-term interest rate marksts. |

A Global Perspective on Real Estate Cycles $171 The real estate industry has been severely affected by recent developments in international capital markets. There has been a decline in real estate investment trust (REIT) share prices, and a decline in capital available for real estate ventures. These setbacks have coincided with serious financial problems of very large hedge funds and other institutional investors in the market for commercial mortgage-backed securities. This volume collects the revised papers first presented at a conference hosted by New York University’s Salomon Center on the impact of globalization on real estate business cycles. To this end, the conference offered new insights into the implications of U.S. and global real estate cycles on real estate securities including REITs and mortgage-backed securities as well as direct real estate investment. The most important insight is that the amplitude and frequency of the cycles differ from place to place and time to time. To the extent that this implies that real estate markets around the world are not yet fully integrated, there are opportunities for global investors. There are also risks; the markets are becoming more correlated, most particularly in periods of crisis. Indeed, the relative immaturity of the Thai real estate market contributed significantly to the extent and severity of the Asian financial crisis of 1997. To exploit these opportunities and to manage the resulting risk, portfolio managers need to develop new data sources and empirical procedures designed to maximize the information content of the data that is available. The lack of high quality data emerges as the central and most pressing issue, not only from a portfolio management context, but alsofrom the standpoint of public policy. |

Whether I produce for my own personal consumption or for a speculative investment leading to an eventual exchange, the expense of production must necessarily be paid out of present wealth. The factors of production being land, labor, capital, and superintendence, these have to be furnished in advance, or else no production is possible. Moreover, they have to be furnished whether they are paid for or not, by the director of the productive enterprise; the conductor of the productive enterprise may be able to secure the necessary factors of production (whether land or labor or capital) and agree to pay for them when the commodity shall have been disposed of at some future period ; but in this case the furnishers of the means of production (land or labor or capital) are merely taking their share in the risks and contingencies. In such a case they may either agree to take a proportionate share or piece ofthe product (whatever may be its eventual market value) or their share of the price ultimately obtained for it, if any. Obviously, such an arrangement of general division, at agreed proportions of the risks in productive enterprise, rarely occurs, and is generally impracticable, especially in the payment of the labor necessary for production. As every productive enterprise always contains an element of risk, the great difficulty in profit-sharing between employer and employee lies in the fact that the employees are not in a position to bear risks. For this reason the undertaker of the productive enterprise agrees in advance to pay for all his necessary outlays . |

A Woman to Blame $5.99 Florida P.I. Gin Ritchey lives on a boat and takes life easy whenever she can. Trouble is, she never overheard a conversation she didn’t find interesting. Her snowbird neighbors from New Jersey, three couples and a widower with a sexy young girlfriend, spend a lot of time outdoors where she can share their lives vicariously. When the widower dies mysteriously, everyone suspects the girlfriend, but Gin isn’t so sure. There’s something suspicious about the situation, and when she talks to Bunny (who was born Agnes), she soon figures out how a seemingly natural death could really have been murder. All she has to do is prove it–oh, and find out who did it. Before Gin can fit the puzzle together, another of the snowbirds is dead. The obvious suspect is Vinnie, the investment counselor who is a compulsive gambler, but neither his wife nor Gin believes he did the killings. Gin’s investigations reveal some secrets the snowbirds would prefer to have kept, but not in time to prevent yet another attempted murder. When she finally learns the reason for the first death, all becomes clear–or does it? |

A strategic model of investment and price competition among container ports. $49.99 The recent globalization of manufacturing and outsourcing led to an unparalleled growth in demand for containerized shipping services over the past years. Worldwide, ports have been making considerable efforts to appropriate a share of this rapidly increasing demand. Significant public and private resources are allocated toward modernization and/or expansion of container terminals.;The container port market structure is oligopolistic and unlike perfectly competitive firms or monopolists, oligopolists have to consider the policies of their competitors, because they engage in a market game in which their profits depend on the behavior of their rivals. Accordingly, the profitability of their investment decisions is highly dependent on the investment behavior of other competitor ports.;This study employs elements of non-cooperative game theory to develop a theoretical model of investment and price competition within the port industry context. To examine whether or not potential investment decisions yield profitable outcomes, three scenarios are analyzed: a static status quo model in which ports compete in prices and no investment occurs, a static model in which ports compete by being able to make both pricing and investment adjustments, and a dynamic model that accounts for a construction lag. Furthermore, an economic experiment is designed and conducted to test the theoretical model’s predictions.;The experimental results reveal that investments are significantly above subgame perfect equilibrium predictions. Additionally, prices fall below their predicted equilibrium levels, and overall profitability is considerably lower than that obtained in the theoretical model. In the presence of these higher than expected levels of investment, both prices and profits are almost fifty percent less than their status-quo (non-investment) values. Results also show that an intensified level of competition leads to higher levels of investment.;These findings suggest that in a highly |

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF FDI ON THE INDIAN ECONOMY $99.99 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is an investment made by Multi-National Enterprises (MNEs) or by a non-resident in an enterprise of host (recipient) countries over which they can a have control and earn private returns. It is important to note that developing countries significantly eased restrictions on FDI inflows and operations of MNEs in early 1980s. This trend became even more widespread during the 1990s, which brought a significant FDI inflow into developing countries. In fact, developing countries received nearly 40 per cent global FDI inflows in 1994-96, compared to 25 per cent in 1980-84. This trend of growing share of developing countries kept on increasing till 1999-00, but it came down to 30 per cent during 2001-02. Within the group of developing countries, the distribution of FDI flows varied significantly both across regional groupings and individual countries. Of the developing countries, China has been receiving the largest share of FDI since 1992 and India has been placed in the 7th spot in 2002. In fact, India opened up its economy and allowed MNEs in the core sectors as part of reform process in the beginning of 1990s. |

Accept Me As I Am $15.7 For longer than I can recall I have had poetry burning its way through my veins. My style has changed over the years as I have grown and developed as a woman, but my heart has never changed. I may have maintained the simplicity of life, but my heart continues to flourish. Please feel free to pull up to a comfortable place in your life, sip a warming cup of tea and walk with me down the pathways of my heart. As you walk I hope you’ll allow our souls to become friends because at times we may feel the need to cry together, to laugh together and to share the stories of our hearts. Poetry isn’t just for reading, it’s for coming into touch with your own soul. I hope you allow the words of my soul to touch yours and show you a brighter picture outside the window to your soul. Much like we have all experienced at one time or another, this is a story told through poetry that follows a woman’s emotional investment of the birth, life and death of a love and her struggles to rebuild her heart and soul when love dies. It begins with the meeting of two hearts, travels through the joy of falling in love, the ups and downs of being in love, and getting married. Eventually it wanders the rocky road of one person destroying a grand love, the ending of the relationship, into the depression that so commonly sets in after a love dies. In the end, the survivor rebuilds her self-esteem and respect to become strong and whole again. |
