Portfolio Managers
High Yield Investment In Private Equity Opportunity For Portfolio Managers & Investors Is Film
The term non-correlated asset classes covers a whole range of potential investments, including venture capital, real estate, private equity, and commodities, but also alternative investment strategies.
But in today’s economy of crashing public equity markets, defaulting hedge funds, and non-existent real estate plays, one company believes investing in film slates, including theatrical distribution, offers a high yield alternative investment that can be leveraged with tax benefits and multiple sources of revenues including theatrical, DVD, video on demand, cable, and the foreign markets.
As a non correlated asset class, films and film finance has outperformed every non correlated asset class in the world if you look at the more than $6 billion dollars poured into motion picture finance deals in the last 3 years, the IRR across the spectrum for both studios and independents are resilient to global economic declines in other industries.
When defense contractor Honeywell, New York Hedge Fund Elliot Associates, and Dune Capital invested more than a combined total of more than a billion dollars towards several different film funds, many pension funds, private banks, hedge fund managers, private equity groups, and high net worth investors and family offices started to follow suit enter the movie business.
Investors from Wall Street to Silicon Valley to the Middle East to Russia have been parking their money into Hollywood.
Anil Ambani, Larry Ellison Of Oracle, Paul Allen Of Microsoft, Steven Rales, Fred Smith of Federal Express, Norman Waitt, the Co-Founder of Gateway Computers, Jeff Skoll Of Ebay, Marc Turtletaub of The Money Store, Roger Marino Of EMC Corp, Sidney Kimmel Of Jones Apparel Group, Minnesota Twins owner Bill Pohlad; Real Estate Developers Tom Rosenberg and Bob Yari, and, financiers Sheikh Waleed Al Ibrahim, Michel Litvak, and Philip Anschutz are all behind the finance of a lot of films that range from box office hits to Academy Award winners.
Institutional investors and hedge funds investing in films include Elliot Associate, Stark, Columbus Nova, Bain, Honeywell, and others.
Non-correlated investment strategies can be used by investors to neutralize, or counterbalance, the risk that one, or more, of the investments in a traditional portfolio of Stocks And Bonds falls in value. In order to do this, investors typically place between 5% and 20% of their total investment portfolio into alternative investments to protect the remainder of the portfolio from downside risk.
Among the spectrum of asset classes targeted by high net-worth individuals, institutional investors, pension funds or private banks, alternative investments are becoming popular offering more diversification to investors’ portfolios. The benefits of such diversification have been demonstrated by Harry Max Markowitz ( 1990, Nobel Prize in Economics ) in the Modern Portfolio Theory. He proved mathematically that an investor can reduce portfolios’ risks simply by holding instruments which are not perfectly correlated – a correlation coefficient not equal to one. By holding A Diversified Portfolio, investors should be able to reduce their exposure to individual asset risk.
If investors are attracted by alternative investments in their quest of alpha, it is because allocating to alternative investments offers advantages compared with traditional asset classes and diversification to a portfolio âEUR” though involving a certain level of risk.
As investors have become more concerned about their risk-adjusted returns, especially in bearish market environments, interest in alternative investment strategies gained momentum.
By investing in alternative investments, a portfolio manager or a given investor aims at obtaining performance from the relationships between securities. A non-correlated asset class behaves independently from other securities composing a portfolio. Such investment vehicles allow investors to hedge the risk that an asset falls in value and avoid any snowball effects. One of the main benefits of alternative investment strategies lies in the fact they minimize downside risk.
When educated about properly structuring leveraged film finance which may also include U.S. and international tax incentives to minimize the risk many private bankers, sovereign wealth funds, high net worth investors, family offices, and pension plans understand that they are not gambling on one film hoping to win a film festival. When a company is looking to finance 10, 20, 40,50, 75 films there is more than just upside on revenues from each one but a final exit strategy after 5-7 years that can bring 300-400% returns on capital invested.
Film, Entertainment, Media, And Hollywood in general seems to be thriving and immune from economic woes. If you look at the theatrical box office receipts and DVD growth of recent films, including ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ or “Twilight” which had zero movie stars, the ROI on these and numerous other films exceed the ROI and revenues of auto manufacturers, real estate, stocks, mutual funds, etc. Primarily because a well made film is not a local commodity that is just bough and sold once but a global one that has revenue potential from more than 50 countries and medias including theatrical, cable, tv, satellite, airline, DVD, and the huge explosion of Video on Demand.
While some private equity outfits may balk at the notion that Hollywood is safe this country was built based on blue chip industries and for the retail investors, Wall Street and Real Estate was the path to go. Well, when retail investors as well as institutional investors are transitioning from brick and mortar investments to the film business, the underlying factor is ‘why’?”
Some U.S. investors and C corporations are looking for either a strict 100% deduction of their investment under IRS Section 181 or simply being in a portfolio of non correlates investment opportunities. Overseas investors simply want a high yield non-correlated asset class that has long term appreciation such as our hybrid film slate and 100% control over U.S. theatrical distribution.
And for smaller retail investors, not including affluent families or ultra high net worth investors, the bridge between film finance, film production, distribution, and technology are converging so that investors see their investment bring an immediate return from the monetization of state tax credits as part of the equity stream, an upside in a number of films vs. investing in a single picture, possible Section 181 benefits, as well as being involved with creating jobs and stimulating the economy since every film production creates 50-100 jobs.

Brand Portfolio Strategy $96.59 Launching brand extensions is seriously considered by companies as a profitable growth strategy. The basis of this study is the impact of brand portfolio strategy and differentiation on consumer evaluation of incongruent extensions, or extensions perceived to have low fit with the parent brand. The main issue addressed in this thesis is: how choice of extension brand portfolio strategy and differentiation strategy from its parent brand can compensate for the problems caused by lower perceived parentextension fit? The study was designed as a 2x2x2 experiment to test the interaction between three independent variables (perceived fit, brand portfolio strategy and differentiation) and their impact on one dependent variable (brand extension attitude). The results support the initial proposition that wisely using brand portfolio strategy and differentiation strategy might compensate for lack of fit. Therefore, brand managers may overcome problems caused by lower perceived fit, and succeed with business expansion opportunities that might be found in lower fit categories. Portfolio Indexing: Theory and Practice $158.05 The dominant paradigm in modernday fund management remains the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Originally developed in the 1960s as an explanatory and predictive model of capital market behaviour, it has subsequently acquired enormous significance in many fundmanagement institutions. Harold Hutchinsons Portfolio Indexing is a longoverdue theoretical and practical perspective on the managers versus trackers debate. He concludes that the indexing solution to risk management is flawed and that individual judgment will always have a proper role to play in investment. This muchneeded book will hopefully help to stop the current steamrolling move of the fund management industry towards indexing in its tracks, and encourage a more balanced view of the benefits of the active manager, especially in volatile or falling markets. Phillip Keane, Director, Industrial Bank of Japan Asset Management International Ltd Portfolio Indexing challenges the growing consensus in favour of portfolio indexing as the optimal investment strategy. His devastating criticisms of the theoretical foundations underlying indexing, and his plea for a more modest inductive approach to portfolio management, have huge and as yet untapped implications for the asset management industry. Dr Andrew Allan, Vice President, Salomon Smith Barney Professionals, students and amateur investors alike will profit from this enjoyable tract on how to maintain and navigate vehicles of investment. A Global Perspective on Real Estate Cycles $171 The real estate industry has been severely affected by recent developments in international capital markets. There has been a decline in real estate investment trust (REIT) share prices, and a decline in capital available for real estate ventures. These setbacks have coincided with serious financial problems of very large hedge funds and other institutional investors in the market for commercial mortgage-backed securities. This volume collects the revised papers first presented at a conference hosted by New York University’s Salomon Center on the impact of globalization on real estate business cycles. To this end, the conference offered new insights into the implications of U.S. and global real estate cycles on real estate securities including REITs and mortgage-backed securities as well as direct real estate investment. The most important insight is that the amplitude and frequency of the cycles differ from place to place and time to time. To the extent that this implies that real estate markets around the world are not yet fully integrated, there are opportunities for global investors. There are also risks; the markets are becoming more correlated, most particularly in periods of crisis. Indeed, the relative immaturity of the Thai real estate market contributed significantly to the extent and severity of the Asian financial crisis of 1997. To exploit these opportunities and to manage the resulting risk, portfolio managers need to develop new data sources and empirical procedures designed to maximize the information content of the data that is available. The lack of high quality data emerges as the central and most pressing issue, not only from a portfolio management context, but alsofrom the standpoint of public policy. |

Active Alpha: A Portfolio Approach to Selecting and Managing Alternative Investments $17.99 Praise for Active Alpha”Active alpha is the quest for every sophisticated investor. This book covers all of the key alpha sources currently mined by active managers, reduces the complexity of the subject, and helps the investor get started in the right direction.”Mark Anson, Chief Executive Officer, Hermes Pensions Management Ltd.”Long-held traditional methods for investing large portfolios are giving way to new processes that are designed to improve productivity and diversification. These changes find their locus in the sometimes overly mysterious world of absolute return strategies. In this book, Alan Dorsey demystifies that new world and provides a guiding pathway into the future of professional portfolio management. This is an important read for any investor who plans to succeed going forward.”Britt Harris, Chief Investment Officer, Teacher Retirement System of Texas”With great lucidity, Alan Dorsey’s book, Active Alpha, fills an important void by identifying the relevant institutional features of this complex subject and by providing a unifying analytic framework for understanding and constructing portfolios of alternative assets. For anyone investing in the alternative class, from the new student to the experienced practitioner, Active Alpha is a necessary read. I am recommending it to everyone I know with such an interest, and it is destined to become a much thumbed reference on my shelf.”Steve Ross, Franco Modigliani Professor of Financial Economics, Sloan School, MIT |

Active Credit Portfolio Management: A Practical Guide to Credit Risk Management Strategies $175 The introduction of the euro in 1999 marked the starting point of the development of a very liquid and heterogeneous EUR credit market, which exceeds EUR 350bn with respect to outstanding corporate bonds. As a result, credit risk trading and credit portfolio management gained significantly in importance. The book shows how to optimize, manage, and hedge liquid credit portfolios, i.e. applying innovative derivative instruments. Against the background of the highly complex structure of credit derivatives, the book points out how to implement portfolio optimization concepts using credit-relevant parameters, and basic Markowitz or more sophisticated modified approaches (e.g., Conditional Value at Risk, Omega optimization) to fulfill the special needs of an active credit portfolio management on a single-name and on a portfolio basis (taking default correlation within a credit risk model framework into account). This includes appropriate strategies to analyze the impact from credit-relevant newsflow (macro- and micro-fundamental news, rating actions, etc.). As credits resemble equity-linked instruments, we also highlight how to implement debt-equity strategies, which are based on a modified Merton approach. The book is obligatory for credit portfolio managers of funds and insurance companies, as well as bank-book managers, credit traders in investment banks, cross-asset players in hedge funds, and risk controllers. |

ActiveBeta Indexes: Capturing Systematic Sources of Active Equity Returns $49.95 What is the nature of active equity management returns? Do active equity managers truly add value? Do they have idiosyncratic skill or are they providing only beta-like systematic sources of active return? In this groundbreaking book, the authors provide new answers to some of the oldest questions about investing. What if, they suggest, a significant portion of active management returns were driven by systematic sources of active equity returns? And what if these systematic active return sources could be captured more efficiently, transparently, and cost-effectively in a passive index structure? The result would be an innovative framework—ActiveBeta® Indexes.ActiveBeta Indexes presents an investment solution that better defines the investment styles of active managers (i.e., common sources of active returns) and provides an efficient, transparent, and cost-effective passive capture of a significant portion of traditional active management returns. The authors first describe the basis for and evolution of market and style indexes, exploring their development and their limitations. They then detail the theoretical framework and supporting research behind the ActiveBeta Indexes. After introducing the concept of Active Betas, they present their research into the nature and relationships, as well as the pricing and persistence, of the systematic sources of active equity returns. They proceed to illustrate the methodology employed to create the ActiveBeta Indexes and offer a detailed analysis of their performance. The authors then demonstrate the various applications of the ActiveBeta Indexes, including their uses in style investing, performance attribution, portfolio structuring, and asset allocation. They conclude by offering a variety of customizable, alternative solutions for capturing the systematic sources of active equity returns. The investment industry needs to take a critical look at the current state of traditional active management and |

Paradoxically, alliance participation may cause harm to the participating firms |
