Even if you never bought or sold shares (stock) before, you’ve almost certainly heard of the stock market. You would have also heard how a lot of people have made a lot of money on it, and how some people even earn their living entirely from trading in stock. So what exactly is the stock market and how does it work?

The stock market is the market where you can buy and sell shares or stock in companies. The numbers of Shares Of Stock you have in a company represent how much of that company you own. The value of each share will fluctuate daily depending on the success or perceived success of the company, the state of the economy and the amount of people who want to buy or sell those shares. For example, if a company reports a bigger than expected profit for the year, the share price is likely to rise in value as more people want to purchase those shares. Likewise, if a company’s profits drop unexpectedly; their share price might decline in value.

Anybody can invest in the stock market, and when the value of the stock of the companies they have invested in grows, so too will the value of their portfolio. You can make more money than you originally put in if you sell stock for a higher price than what you bought it for.

“Playing the stock market” refers to the act of buying and selling stock in order to make a profit.
